Surface Chemist, Chemical Engineer

Surface Chemist, Chemical Engineer

German Aerospace Center (DLR)
  • Ulm, BW, Germany

Your mission

The aim of the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm is to develop precision instruments for space applications based on quantum technologies and, in close cooperation with industry, mature them into prototypes. It thus provides a bridge between fundamental research and industry. Together with the DLR-Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing in Hannover and the Galileo Competence Center in Oberpfaffenhofen, the institute in Ulm plays a pioneering role in these fields of research and application. The research of the four core departments Quantum Metrology, Quantum Information and Communication, Quantum Nanophysics, and Quantum Control of Charged Matter Waves is complemented by support from three cross-sectional departments of Quantum Engineering, Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems, and Theoretical Quantum Physics. The institute works in an interdisciplinary way, where fundamental theoretical research and experimental tests meets engineering.

As part of the quantum computing initiative, our department Integration of Micro- and Nanosystems (IMN) deals, among other things, with the development of technologies to improve diamond-based quantum computers. Participate in building the ecosystem for German quantum computer hardware, at the Ulm Innovation Center and support the development of even more powerful quantum computers. Lay the foundation for the next generation of quantum computers with us.

Your tasks include:
• You develop and optimize cleaning, homogenization and termination processes of diamond surfaces with the aim of improving the spin properties of near-surface NV centers in diamond.
• You investigate and simulate surface chemical processes during the surface treatment of diamond.
• You develop and optimize plasma etching processes for diamond surfaces with atomic resolution.
• You carry out measurements to characterize the chemical composition of diamond surfaces.
• You document the experiments with regard to the goals and archive research data that has been made accessible to the public.
• You exchange scientific results with international colleagues, prepare scientific publications for scientific journals and give presentations at national and international conferences, etc.

Your qualifications
• Completed scientific university degree (master/diploma university) in natural sciences (e.g. specialization in surface chemistry, chemistry, physics, or similar) or engineering sciences (e.g. in the fields of chemical engineering, materials science, nanotechnology) or other courses relevant to the job.
• Knowledge of simulating surface chemical processes
• Pleasure and experience with practical laboratory
• Very good knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written
• First experiences with micro/nanotechnology
• Experience in setting up laboratory structures
• Research experience in the field of surface chemistry
